Door County with Kids: A 2-Day Itinerary
This is a sequence, not a ranked list — if you want our reasoning on which kid-friendly stops are the best in the county, see Best Things to Do in Door County with Kids. Here, we're just laying out two days in the order that actually works for a family: big activity first while everyone's fresh, something calmer once naps start getting negotiated, and a treat to close each day.
A few things worth knowing before you start:
- Day 2 has a weather branch. The default plan is swimming at Whitefish Dunes. If the forecast turns, swap in the Maritime Museum — it's indoors and doesn't need sunshine; see the museum's page for what's on exhibit right now.
- Base yourself between Fish Creek and Ephraim if you can. It puts Day 1 within a short drive end to end, though Day 2 pulls you south toward Sturgeon Bay and Jacksonport.
- Pack swimsuits regardless of the forecast. Even the rainy-day swap keeps you near water; you may still get a window to use them.
- This is a template, not a contract. Trade any stop for one you like better — the order is the point, not the specific businesses.
Peninsula State Park
Day 1 morningStart Day 1 here, while everyone's fresh and the park's still filling in for the day. The short version for this itinerary: get in early, let the morning run long, and don't schedule anything else before lunch.
Sister Bay Waterfront Park & Beach
Day 1 afternoonThe down-shift after a big morning at the park — easy to get to and easy to leave once a nap becomes more urgent than an adventure. See our beaches guide for the full rundown on why this one works well for young kids.
Wilson's Restaurant & Ice Cream Parlor
Day 1, end of dayThe reward stop to close out Day 1. Order, find a spot, let the day end on ice cream.
Door County Maritime Museum
Day 2 morning, weather-dependentThis one's a swap, not a stop — only pull it in if Day 2 morning turns rainy. It sits down in Sturgeon Bay, so it also nudges your day's geography south, which works fine if that's the direction you're heading anyway. Whitefish Dunes State Park
Day 2 middayThe default Day 2 plan if the weather's good: swimming and the boardwalk, no swap needed. This is the one to book the day around when the forecast cooperates.
Not Licked Yet Frozen Custard
Day 2, heading homeOne more stop before the drive home. It's on the way if you're heading out from the Fish Creek side, and a good last excuse to stretch legs before the car.
Want a third day?
Families who have the time sometimes stretch this into three days by adding a Washington Island crossing — kids tend to love the ferry ride itself as much as anything on the island. It's a bigger commitment than anything in this two-day plan, so we've kept it out of the core itinerary; see our Washington Island guide before you build it in, since it needs its own half-day at minimum.
Swaps worth making
- Younger kids, shorter attention spans? Trim Day 1's park time and lean harder on Sister Bay's beach — less driving, easier naps.
- Older kids who want more adventure? Add Eagle Tower's climb to the Day 1 morning before you head to the beach.
- Rain on Day 1 instead of Day 2? The Maritime Museum swap works either day — it's the flexible piece in this plan, not a fixed Day 2 event.
