• Door County Historical Museum

  Open Tue–Sat, May–mid-December; reduced winter days.

  The county's local-history museum, free and easy to spend an hour in — vintage firefighting gear, a recreated old-time street, and Door County stories, distinct from the Maritime Museum a few blocks away. A good stop with kids.

• Door County Maritime Museum

  Climb the tower first: the working-shipyard view explains Sturgeon Bay better than any exhibit. Then do the tug tour.

• Holiday Music Motel

  Year-round; shows run on the Tambourine Lounge / Steel Bridge calendar.

  A restored 1952 motel in downtown Sturgeon Bay that doubles as a working music hub — home of Steel Bridge Songfest and a whole collaborative-songwriting scene, with public shows and a weekly writers' night in its Tambourine Lounge. Not a nightly club, but when something's on, it's the most interesting room in town. Check the calendar.

• Miller Art Museum

  Year-round; closed Sundays and for January changeovers.

  Door County's fine-art museum, free to visit, inside the Sturgeon Bay library. It holds the largest collection anywhere of work by Gerhard Miller, the county's most celebrated artist, and rotates contemporary shows through the rest of the year. Open year-round — a good rainy-day plan.

• Rogue Theater

  Multi-show season, roughly year-round.

  Sturgeon Bay's scrappy community theater, now settled into a permanent home at the DC Arts Center — a six-show season running from serious drama to murder-mystery dinner theater, plus improv and a summer kids' camp. Local, warm, and a good bet for an off-season evening.

• The Farm

  Open daily ~Memorial Day weekend through mid-October.

  A living museum of rural America north of Sturgeon Bay, and a reliable hit with little kids — bottle-feed goat kids and lambs, watch chicks hatch, and wander pioneer log buildings and nature trails. Plan on a couple of hours.

• Third Avenue PlayWorks

  $$ · Year-round season, roughly March through December.

  Door County's professional theater, in an intimate 124-seat house downtown. The company — many of them Equity actors — stages about seven plays and musicals a year, roughly March through December, so there's real theater here well outside the summer rush. Recently renamed from Third Avenue Playhouse; same TAP.
