The Best Live Music in Door County

The short answerDoor County Brewing's Music Hall in Baileys Harbor is the best dedicated room for live music, and the Door Community Auditorium in Fish Creek brings in the big touring names. Birch Creek's barn near Egg Harbor runs nightly student-and-faculty concerts all summer, Holiday Music Motel is the songwriters' hub, and Husby's Garage Bar in Sister Bay has bands most summer weekends. Most music is summer-heavy, so check calendars.

For a small peninsula, Door County punches above its weight for live music — a purpose-built music hall, a touring-arts auditorium, a summer academy that performs nightly, and a songwriting scene run out of an old motel. Here's where to catch a show.

A few things worth knowing:

  1. It's summer-heavy. The most active stretch is June through August; the auditorium and music hall keep some year-round programming, the rest cluster in summer.
  2. Check the calendar and buy ahead. The best shows sell out, especially at the auditorium and Birch Creek.
  3. These are different scenes. Touring headliners, symphony, a barn academy, a songwriters' collective, a bar band — pick by the night you want.

Baileys Harbor · $$ · Website

The best room in the county for live music — a purpose-built hall attached to the Baileys Harbor brewery, with a smart, eclectic booking calendar and the Polka King Porter to drink while you listen.

When a touring band routes through Door County, this is often where they land. Check the schedule and grab tickets early.

Door Community Auditorium

Best for touring names

Fish Creek · Year-round; box office weekday afternoons and show days. · Website

The big room in Fish Creek, and the one that lands names you wouldn't expect this far north — recent seasons have run from Straight No Chaser to the Wailin' Jennys — plus it's the summer home of the Peninsula Music Festival symphony.

Year-round programming, so it's your best bet off-season. Buy ahead for the headliners.

3

Birch Creek Music Performance Center

Best summer concert series

Egg Harbor · Concert season roughly mid-June through early August, plus fall dates. · Website

A summer music academy east of Egg Harbor where advanced students study by day and perform nearly every night with faculty and guest artists, in a historic barn close enough to hear the room.

Percussion and steel pan, symphony, big-band jazz — an easy, joyful night out. Concert season runs mid-June into August.

4

Holiday Music Motel

Best for songwriters

Sturgeon Bay · Year-round; shows run on the Tambourine Lounge / Steel Bridge calendar. · Website

A restored 1952 motel in downtown Sturgeon Bay that runs as a working songwriting hub — home of Steel Bridge Songfest, with public shows and a weekly writers' night in its Tambourine Lounge.

Not a nightly club, but when something's on it's the most interesting room in town, and you never quite know who'll be playing. Check the calendar.

Sister Bay · $$

The straightforward option: Husby's open-air Garage Bar in Sister Bay runs live bands most weekends through the summer, plus a Monday open mic — no tickets, just a beer and a crowd.

The pick when you want music with your night out rather than a night out for the music. Live music runs May through September.

Music happens beyond the venues, too — festivals like Steel Bridge Songfest (June) and the Peninsula Music Festival (August) are worth planning around; check our events for what's on.
