Door County has an outsized theater scene for its size — a historic summer playhouse on the bay, original musicals staged in the woods, a year-round professional company, and outdoor Shakespeare in a lakeside garden. Here's where to catch a show.
A few things worth knowing:
- Summer is the season, but not entirely. Third Avenue PlayWorks runs year-round, and the auditorium programs touring shows into the off-season.
- Book ahead. The summer companies sell out their best nights, especially Peninsula Players.
- A lot of it is outdoors. Northern Sky and Door Shakespeare are open-air — bring a layer and bug spray, and check the weather policy.
Fish Creek · $$$ · Season runs June–October. · Website
America's oldest professional resident summer theater, on a wooded bay-front campus south of Fish Creek — Broadway-caliber casts in a pavilion by the water, with a garden to stroll before the show and a bonfire at intermission.
The whole evening is the draw, not just the play. Book the late-June-through-October season early; the good nights go.

Original musicals under the pines: Northern Sky writes its own shows and stages them outdoors in an amphitheater in Peninsula State Park, with an indoor space in Fish Creek for the shoulder season.

Sturgeon Bay · $$ · Year-round season, roughly March through December. · Website
The county's year-round professional company, in an intimate 124-seat house in downtown Sturgeon Bay — about seven plays and musicals a year, many with Equity actors, so there's real theater here well outside the summer rush.
The pick when you want a serious play rather than a summer musical. Recently renamed from Third Avenue Playhouse.
Baileys Harbor · Summer season, roughly late June through August. · Website
Professional classical theater in the Björklunden garden in Baileys Harbor — a summer season of Shakespeare and the occasional Wilde, staged outdoors under the trees near Lake Michigan.
Pack a cushion and bug spray; it's one of the loveliest ways to spend a warm evening up here. Runs roughly late June through August.
Fish Creek · Year-round; box office weekday afternoons and show days. · Website
The big room in Fish Creek brings in touring stage productions alongside its concert calendar — the place to catch a national tour or a bigger show the summer companies don't stage.
Year-round programming, so it's your off-season option too. Buy ahead for the marquee dates.
Sturgeon Bay · Multi-show season, roughly year-round. · Website
Sturgeon Bay's scrappy community company, settled into a permanent home at the DC Arts Center — a six-show season from serious drama to murder-mystery dinner theater, plus improv and a kids' camp.
Local, warm, and a good bet for an off-season evening out.
