3 Days in Door County: The Full Peninsula Loop

After the drive up through Sturgeon Bay and Egg Harbor, this is where Day 1 slows down. Turn in near Fish Creek and give the afternoon to the loop road — it's the anchor stop for your first day, not a quick pass-through. By the time you've looped through the park and driven the short stretch into Ephraim, a sit-down dinner is the right move to close out a long first day. The Old Post Office is the easy call for that — book ahead if you're visiting in peak summer, since Day 1 dinners fill fast on this stretch of the bay side.

Day 2 is the longest driving day of the loop — all the way up to the peninsula's tip and back — so start it with real coffee rather than whatever's in the rental kitchen. Base Camp is right in Sister Bay, on the route before you continue north, not a detour off it.

This is the reward for making it to the top of the peninsula. Gills Rock is about as far north as Door County goes, and reaching Charlie's Smokehouse means you've covered ground a shorter trip never sees. Eat here before heading back to wherever you're staying for the night — a fitting close to the day that took you the farthest.

First stop coming down the lake side, and the timing matters: climb it early, before the causeway crossing and the tower stairs warm up under the midday sun. Arriving not long after opening tends to mean a quieter causeway and a shorter wait for the stairs, though that's never guaranteed on a busy summer weekend.

By midday on Day 3, you're two and a half days into the loop and your legs know it. This is the stop built for that — wade in, sit in the sand, and let the rest break from driving and walking before you close out the trip.
